Let's Talk Basics: 5 Pieces You Need In Your Closet

Fashion is so fun, but it can also be a little bit daunting. There are so many cool pieces out there that sometimes it’s hard to know where to start. When it comes to style, it’s so important to have a basic foundation that you can eventually build off of — think simple pieces that can be styled in multiple ways.

Personally, I’m pretty busy on a day-to-day basis, so I really don’t have tons of time to choose my outfits in the morning. Generally speaking, I like keeping my closet clean and organized with a few simple pieces that can be styled effortlessly and efficiently. That way I really don’t have to put that much thought into my outfits when I’m on the go.

So, with that said, here are 5 basic pieces that will instantly elevate your wardrobe.

A Good Fitting Pair Of Jeans

Looking for a good place to start? Jeans are the answer. A good pair of light wash jeans can be worn day and night, winter and summer. My favorite jeans are the Levi’s Mile High Crop Flare Jeans. During the day, I’ll wear them with a basic white shirt and some sneakers, and at night I’ll throw on a leather jacket, some booties and jewelry and I’m good to go.

You can find some really great jeans in the $50-$100 range, and a good pair of jeans will last you a few years. When it comes to jeans, I’ve found that the quality of the jean really does make all the difference, so I’ll typically keep an eye out for sales on Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s and Revolve. All of these places typically have really great sales around Labor Day and Memorial Day, as well as for Black Friday — so keep an eye out!

Some of my favorite jean brands: Levi’s // AG // AGOLDE // Rag & Bone // Redone // Reformation

Leather Jacket

The leather jacket is something that every girl should have in her closet. This staple piece can be worn in so many different ways and can easily be dressed up or down. Add an edgy flare to a more feminine look by pairing your leather jacket with a cute dress and sneakers or combat boots or go for that “model off duty” look and throw your jacket on top of a white tee shirt paired with some boyfriend jeans and simple slides.

A good leather jacket will typically fall at a higher price point, however there are tons of stores that sell vegan or faux leather pieces for a fraction of the price. When it comes to leather AllSaints has some of my favorite leather pieces, however if you’re not ready to invest, I recommend checking out Princess Polly and Nasty Gal. These two online stores carry pieces that are really up to date and on trend, at a more moderate price point.

Graphic Tee

This is such an easy one, and something that you should stock up on. Graphic tees are one of the best ways to add a little something extra to any ordinary look. When it comes to styling tees, the options are endless. I love wearing a graphic tee with some simple jeans, tucked into a midi skirt, or under a jacket. If you’re the type of person who’s always in a rush, do yourself a favor and get a few graphic tees — I promise this will make choosing outfits in the morning 10x easier!

For really good quality tee shirts that will last a long time, I really recommend checking out Redone — they have the softest shirts that fit so well. On the less expensive end, Princess Polly and Nasty Gal have some really great options too.

Slip Dress

This next one might just be my personal favorite. The options really are endless with a good slip dress. Depending on how you choose to accessorize it, a slip dress can easily go casual to chic, day to night. During the day time, pair a slip dress with a leather or denim jacket and some chunky white sneakers, and then at night simple swap the sneakers for some heels and change your hair and makeup, and all of the sudden your look is completely transformed.

Because slip dresses are so simple in their cut, you can really play around with color — I’m talking pinks, blues… even yellow’s. If you’re wanting to stand out with a bold color, but still look chic and not too over the top, this is a great option.

Black Booties

What’s the one piece that literally goes with everything? A pair of black booties. Shoes can really make or break an outfit, but they’re not always the first thing I think to buy. Because of this, I tend to go super basic when it comes to footwear, and really try to stick to buying things that are super versatile.

A good pair of black booties can be worn casually during the day, or out at night — and they add height… what’s not to love?

Quick tip: I have a chrome extension called Honey downloaded on my computer. Essentially this app will scan any site that you’re on for discount and promo codes, and automatically apply them during checkout. If you’re an avid online shopper, you need to install Honey.

There you have it. The five piece you need in your closet.

Hope this helps! As always, be sure to leave your thoughts in the comment section, and share this post!
