Personalize Your Space

Personalize Your Space

September 10, 2017 -

For those of you that know me personally, you are probably well aware of the fact that I am pretty meticulous when it comes to my space.  From the way in which my bed and side tables look, to what is hanging on the walls, my room is a reflection of myself, and has always served as my calm and quiet space.  So, naturally, this was one of my biggest concerns when going off to college; the fact that I would no longer get to return to my room – the room that I spent years perfecting, after a long day.

These first few weeks that I’ve been at school have been super busy, and I realized earlier this week that although I felt integrated, I still didn’t feel 100% settled in.  My room seemed extremely dull and empty to me, and I was tired of staring at blank walls.  So, the other day I decided to devote a few hours to perfecting my space.

The first thing that I did was get a few throw pillows to add to my bed.  If you’re looking for something that’s budget friendly, definitely checkout target’s home section.  They have tons of super simple pieces that add to any space.  I also walked around, and popped into some of the home stores in my neighborhood to check out what they had.  I ended up grabbing a super simple but cute pillow from westelm (the one that I got is out of stock but here is a similar one).

Next, I stopped at the local market, where I picked up a few plants.  There is a huge window in my room that lets in lots of light during the day, so I thought what better way to liven up the space than with some actual life!  I decided to go with a white Orchid and a Succulant, because they are two fairly modern looking plants, and I loved the way that the green leaves stood out agaist the white.

After that, I headed to Paper Source to pick up some painting supplies.  I originally wanted to create some sort of gallery wall, but everything in New York is riduculously expensive, and I knew that it would take way too much time and money to acqurie enough pieces to cover an entire wall.  If you are also on a budget, creating a few of your own pieces is a great alternative!  I went ahead and picked up some water color paper and paint, headed home and got painting.  I had found a few abstract pieces on line that I liked, and used them as inspiration for my own creations.  If you’re like me, and aren’t gifted when it comes to art, I reccomend going for something a little bit more abstract because it’s way easier to cover up any mistakes!

Lastly, I added a few accent pieces to the room, and voila! When it comes to accents, I’m a huge fan of taking what you already have, and turning it into something beautiful.  I just stacked a few books and then topped them off with a candle and a calendar, and it ended up looking really beautiful.

While I didn’t add a whole lot to my room, these simple pieces made a huge difference and made it feel much more homey and comfortable.  I am really pleased with how my room turned out, and hope that you guys were abe to take some inspiration from some of these ideas!

Good Luck!
