A Day at LACMA

A Day at LACMA

November 8, 2016 -

Over the weekend, I decided to head over to LACMA to check out the art scene there.  Art has been a huge part of my life from the time that I was very young.  Many of my childhood memories include visiting art galleries and museums, and spending hours staring at some of my favorite paintings in absolute awe.  Today, I enjoy art in a completely different way, and have started to appreciate different elements of art.  While I still do, and always will love classic art, I’ve also gained a new fascination for contemporary art.  Contemporary art brings so many new elements and techniques to the table, and I love picking different pieces apart and trying to figure out the message behind them.

LACMA has a wonderful array of both classic, and contemporary art, and I could honestly spend hours there, roaming from room to room.  Some of my favorite pieces at the museum include lots of bright color, texture, and light. Perhaps the most interesting exhibit that I visited while at LACMA was called “the rain room”.  Essentially, I walked into a dark room that had one bright light in the corner.  The center of the room was basically a giant shower head, and was supposed to mimic the effect of rain.  When we walked underneath the storm, however, it would stop raining exactly where we were, so despite the fact that it was “raining” all around us, we, the viewers, remained completely dry.  I loved that this piece incorporated elements of the natural world, all while integrating them with technology, something that is becoming more and more relevant in the lives of so many people.  This piece was both beautiful and dynamic, captivating and interactive, and perfectly demonstrated why I appreciate contemporary so much.

Today, art is all about drawing in the viewers, and unlike in the past, we, the spectators, have the opportunity to interact with it, and become part of the art itself.  Art today is all about bringing people in, and shocking them; making people think outside of the box, and look at things in a completely new way.

LACMA has a wonderful array of classic, modern, and contemporary art, and if you’re ever in the area, I highly recommend stopping by.  The museum is absolutely huge, and it’s impossible to see everything in one day, so I already can’t wait for my next visit!
